How to Replace a Kia Sportage Replacement Key

The key in many Kia models has a keyless entry system built into. The key functions like a remote control, and is exchangeable by a Kia dealer.

Key fobs might stop working for several reasons, including an empty coin battery, worn buttons signals, signal interference, water damage and a damaged receiver module. Here are some tips to help you get your Kia key fob that is a replacement for the sportage again.

How to replace the remote key or smart key

The battery inside your Kia's smart key will eventually have to be replaced, whether it is a remote key, a push-to-start key or a regular metal key that doesn't have a transponder. This is especially true if your car shows a message that states the smart or remote keys have low battery power.

Luckily, it's quite simple to do. To replace the battery of the keyfob remove your mechanical key from the slit on the back of the fob. Then, pull the cover off. A small screw is inside the key fob to hold the battery in place. Using a small screwdriver, remove the screw and remove the battery that was in place. Then insert the new one and close the slit inside the key fob.

When the key fob is equipped with a fresh battery and you've tested it, press the locks and unlock buttons. It's good If the doors lock and unlock as expected. You can now use your Kia's hands-free lock/unlock feature whenever your fingers get chilly or you have to make errands in Brandon.

Note: Some key fobs (transponder chip or smart keys) might require their programming done. This requires a special programming machine that only the dealer or locksmith can access. To replace the battery in the key fob, you must remove the cover that covers the rear. Utilize a plastic plier tool to loosen the latch that holds the black negative cable. Remove the old battery and orient the new one to ensure that the "+" positive side faces you and the "negative" negative side is facing the fob's electronic contacts. Push the new CR2032 battery straight into place, avoiding excessive force to avoid damaging or breaking the contacts on the metal.

After the new battery has been installed after which you turn the key fob off and then turn it on in the ignition for a few times until the door locks. Then you can test your Kia key fob to check if it is working properly again.

How to replace the smart key?

You can have an ordinary keyfob or Smart Key depending on the model of Kia Sportage. The smart key features an embedded mechanical key blade while the standard keyfob does not. Both kinds of key fobs come with a battery inside them that will eventually need to be replaced. Fortunately, this is an easy process that takes just two minutes.

Be sure to turn off your Kia and sit on a flat or well-lit surface prior to when you begin. Also, keep in mind that there are tiny parts inside the fob that can fall out if not vigilant.

The first step is to locate the small release button on the back of the lower part of the fob. It could be a circular button or rectangular slot. You can open the key fob by pressing the button.

Once the key fob is removed, you can remove the battery that was in it. The new battery should be a CR-2032 and can be purchased online or at a local auto parts store. When you are done it should be possible to lock, unlock and start your vehicle using your key fob - even if the engine isn't running!

How do I replace the mechanical key

The Kia key fob is a great convenience that allows us to lock and unlock our car with the click of the button. Like any other device like a key fob, the Kia may have issues. There are solutions to fix these problems and keep your key fobs functioning for an extended period of time.

A dead or drained battery is one of the most common issues. The battery could cause the device to stop working or operate intermittently. If this happens, try replacing the battery with a new one.

If this does not solve the issue, you can use an ordinary screwdriver with a flat head to push the plastic casing of the fob open. Be sure not to damage any internal components or scratch the plastic. Once the battery is removed then replace it with a new one.

Once the new battery is in, shut and open the doors with the mechanical key (every key fob in the kia has an emergency mechanical key that will fit in the slot). Test the key fob to confirm it's functioning properly. If the key fob isn't working, call a dealer or locksmith to help resolve the issue. Make sure they make you an emergency key that functions for all trunk and door cylinders to avoid lockouts in the future.
